The Rivers State Chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria has called for full scale investigation into the one billion naira intervention funds by the Federal Government, for the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori and Ignatius Ajuru University, Port Harcourt.
The party’s position was contained in a press statement signed by the Publicity Secretary, Jerry Needam, and made available to journalists in Port Harcourt.
The Action Congress of Nigeria, Rivers State Chapter was acting in response to the revelation by the Minister of State for Education, Barrister Nyesom Wike, on a live News and Current Affairs Radio programme, View Point, on Rhythm 93.7 FM, on Saturday July 28, 2012.
The Minister of Education for State, Nyesom Wike during the programme disclosed that 500 million naira each, had been released to the Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori and Ignatius Ajuru University, as Federal Government intervention funds for the two tertiary institutions in Rivers State.
The party said the call has turned out to be necessary following contradictions that such money has been received and the uncontrolled expenditures by the approving authorities in these institutions.
The party charged the State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, Commissioner for Education and the Rivers State House of Assembly as part of their oversight functions to investigate these institutions to determine when the one billion naira was received and how it is being managed.
ACN also condemns the alleged admission racketeering in Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori, rack-rent and inhuman conditions of hostels, collection of bribes from students and staff by two top management staff and taking home one drum of diesel each, monthly.
The party said the Rivers State Polytechnic Bori belongs to all and condemns the attitude of a particular top management staff of the institution acting as a sole administrator.
ACN insists that these are serious issues deserving the intervention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).
The party avows its commitment, as a responsible and credible political party in Rivers State, to continue to hold public officers, irrespective of tribe, party affiliation and social status accountable to tax payers’ money and public utilities entrusted in their care.
