League of Veteran Journalists (LVJ) Rivers State Branch has decried the intermittent conflicts between the various tiers of government and workers’ unions.
The league in a statement issued in Port Harcourt and signed by its Secretary, Senibo (Dr). Augustus A. Cookey, said the conflicts were retarding the nation’s development. It also regretted that the current strike by the ASUU had paralyzed activities in the universities.
LVJ has always maintained that a nation that does not place value on the moral and educational upbringing of the youths is invariably inviting chaos. “We bemoan the nationwide indefinite strike by the union which may finally nail the coffin on the decay in our tertiary institutions”, the congress said.
We are saying, implement the MOU reached with ASUU and watch the progress in the universities not by telephone release of N100bn or N30bn but in cash.
In another development, the LVJ has hailed the appointment of Hon. Justice Peter N. C. Agumagu, former President, Customary Court of Appeal, Rivers State, as the Acting Chief Judge of the state.
The group also commended the governor on his choice of the Justice, saying that the appointment showed the seriousness of Gov. Amaechi in handling and tackling the problems of the state.
The task of smooth settlement of all warring parties is a task Hon. Agumagu will accomplish in less than no time. We believe in his ability to bring about a positive change in the judiciary”. “I want to appeal that all the stakeholders should cooperate and support Hon. Agumagu to ensure that aspirations of Gov. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi are achieved. ###
