NLC, MOSOP Blame Police Commissioner Over Insecurity Situation in Rivers State

The alarming rate of insecurity in Rivers State has been attributed to the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu’s inability to handle the situation.

Speaking during a solidarity visit to Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi at government House in Port Harcourt recently, the chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC in Rivers State, Comr. Chris Oruge lamented the current insecurity situation in the state, stressing that the people of the state are not sure of getting protection as the state has become a den of former militants known for criminality.

According to him, the insecurity of the state has worsened since the posting of Mr. Mbu as the Commissioner of Police, pointing out that Mr. Mbu has become “another former INEC chairman for us and everybody is sleeping with one eye open”.

“All the militants, the bad boys who had left the state have reconvened and have been doing their nefarious activities. The result of their action is on those of us who have no security to protect us except the Almighty God.

Comrade Oruge assured governor Amaechi that the NLC leadership and members in the state will continue to support his administration, despite the oppositions bent on distracting him from his desire to develop the state.

“We are here to make our point, to let you know that the NLC is solidly behind you and we will continue to support your government, since this crisis we have not heard anybody say Amaechi has not done well in Rivers State, so we are completely at a loss as to what the problem is about,” he maintained.

In his response, governor Amaechi who is also the chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum NGF while commending the labour leaders and their members for the solidarity visit, assured that he will continue to stand by the people of the state and ensure the judicial use of fund for their well being.

In a related development, the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) said the state was fast drifting into anarchy, stressing that the shameful crisis was caused by political intolerance, warning that if nothing was urgently done by the Federal Government and security agencies, the crude oil and gas state would return to black days.

MOSOP who spoke through its president, Mr. Legborsi Saro Pyagbara noted that the crisis was taking a dangerous dimension and must be immediately tackled.

According to him, it requires immediate practical and decisive steps to put an end to the crisis including securing of lives and properties in Rivers State. ###
