Uranta Commends Opobo/Nkoro LACA

The Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Council, Hon. Maclean Bethel Uranta, has commended the management of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Action Committee on Aids (LACA) organising sensitization programmes on HIV/AIDS.

Hon. Uranta, who made the remarks in Opobo town at the end a 3-day training workshop on Minimum Prevention Package Intervention (MPPI) in the area, called on the Manager of LACA to draw up a Strategic plan HIV/AIDS response that will improve the health and living condition of the people in the area.

He expressed dissatisfaction with the attitude of the State Primary Health Care Management Board that collects 3 per cent council money at source, yet has no programme that has a direct bearing on the rural populace.

Hon. Uranta opined that since the board takes 3 per cent from council monthly allocation, it should initiate and implement health care programmes and sensitize the people at the grassroots.

The council Chairman who said HIV/AIDS is an epidemic with adverse effects on the society and the economy, called on all to join hands in fighting the virus to reduce the prevalent rate.

The Deputy Director, Prevention, RIVSACA, Mrs. Emilia Obilor, in her remarks, commended Hon. Maclean Bethel Uranta, for his support to LACA in the area.

Mrs. Obilor said that the workshop was aimed at building capacity of community based organizations (CBOS), to enable them reduce the prevalence rate.

Also speaking, the Manager of Opobo/Nkoro LACA, Mr. John Ephraim, said that though LACA in the area was inaugurated in 2006, it became effective at the assumption of office of Hon. Uranta.

He noted that it was Hon. Uranta who made it possible for the council to be one of the first LGAs to access the World Bank grant and thanked the Chairman for the prompt release of counterpart fund. ####
