Federal Ministry of Education has been urged to include Nigerian History in the school curriculum to be taught in Primary and secondary schools in the country.
The call which was made by a veteran soldier of the Nigeria Army Den Kelly G. Tefiemine on Tuesday July 10, 2012 Port Harcourt has it that Nigeria as a country must have to produce people who are Nigerians, who will have good knowledge of the country.
According to Kelly, before students were taught to know the history of Nigeria, adding that it’s not enough to teach Patrick Lumuba, Nelson Mandela among others though they are relevant in African history but that they should be made to know their own country.
He urged that if Muhammadu Buhari (retired), Gen. Ibrahim Babangida (retired), Gen. Yakubu Gowon and the rest of Nigerians are talking today the youth will immediately know that this person was like this or like that yesterday.
He has it that if a Nigerian child learns Nigeria he will know the country and what to use Nigeria for hence the youths will have the mind to come together and chat the way forward but if they are not informed they will remain ignorant of Nigeria and may decide out of ignorance to abandon great nation.
Kelly used this medium to call on Mr. President, Ministry of Education and commissioner for Education and commissioner for Education from the 36 states of the federation academicians, think tanks to come together and plan this curriculum making sure it works for the schools.
He felt the long neglect of this subject in school and how it has affected the youths pointing out the plights of NYSC members in Plateau State saying because the state is so volatile, the government are saying that they must stay but the people is saying no, “must we use this youths to test the security efficiency of the country.
Because they did not study to know every part of the country and it terrain they just stand risk of the people anger and government decision.
Kelly decried how they forfeit to know what to do even at graduate age. ###
