Chief Judge Lauds RSUST Founding Fathers

The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Iche Ndu has lauded the vision of the founding fathers of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt (RSUST) for the technical and manpower development of the State.
Justice Ndu who was speaking as Chairman of the 24th Convocation Lecture of the University stated that the enabling law establishing the University of Science and Technology was passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly in 1980.
He noted that the establishment of the University was due to long and sustained demand for a Technological Institute in Port Harcourt prior to and following the report of the Ashby Commission on Higher Education in Nigeria in 1960.
He pointed out that the founding fathers envisioned a University whose mandate dovetailed into the statements/objects as contained in the University Law, 1980, and the 2002 University calendar namely: to produce scientific and technical manpower of various levels of development as well as science and technical teachers.
The University was also to assist in industrial and other development programmes and provide courses for instruction and pursuit of learning and demand for a technological institute in Port Harcourt.
In his lecture entitled “fulfilling the mandate: Rivers State University of Science and Technology” Emeritus Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Port Harcourt, Prof Nimi Briggs described the vision, mission and mandate of Rivers State University of Science and Technology as probably the best thought of, adding that they are still relevant as they were 30 years ago.
Prof Briggs called on all stakeholders and the University to work hard in enhancing quality of Higher Education and productivity among the nations’ University in order to be in the front burner. ####
