NSCU Kicks Against Re-engaging Retirees

The Nigeria Civil Service Union (NSCU) in the State has appealed to Governor Chibuike Amaechi to discourage the re-engagement of retired public officers as contract staff in the State Civil Service Union Chairman, Comrade Opuoyigbo Tariah Lilly-West who made the appeal while fielding questions from Ministry of Information and Communications reporters, said the practice negates the good intentions of government to reduce unemployment and also frustrates growth in the system.
Comrade Lilly-West wondered the justification for re-engaging a public officer after 35 years of service, contending that it is difficult for anyone to find any good explanation for that.
He said what surprises the union most is that it is mainly Permanent Secretaries, Directors and other top officers who are reengaged, stressing that if it is an emerging policy it should be discontinued immediately.
The NSCU boss, who urged civil servants to bring their legitimate complaints to the knowledge of the union, explained that his leadership has from inception shown willingness to serve both the government and the civil servants as partners in progress.
The Chairman declared “if a retired public officer must necessarily be re-engaged, his services must be seen as totally indispensable.”
He said if the trend is not checked whatever good intentions that led to the re-engagement could be abused with time, thereby shortchanging those who have taken over from such officers.
Comrade Lilly-West who described Governor Amaechi as a forthright leader who does not like any abuse of power, explained that his appeal is predicted on the values of justice and equal opportunity to all which the State Governor cherishes without reservation. ####
