Transport Commissioner Inaugurates Committee to Regulate Driving Schools

Rivers State Transport Commissioner, Deacon Akie Dagogo Fubara has inaugurated a committee for driving school inspection and certification with a view of streamline the operations of driving instructors.
Speaking during the inauguration of the committee in Port Harcourt the commissioner said the idea of setting up this committee was necessitated by the fact that a number of driving schools operating in the state for not meet the required standard.
He said in line with the statutory requirement and the responsibility of government the State Ministry of Transport in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps is poised to streamline the operation of driving schools to help turn out quality drivers.
He frowned at the situation whereby all trained drivers who did not know or understand road signs get under the wheels after being trained by quacks, stressing that this trend can no longer be tolerated.
Also speaking the Sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Rivers State Commander Andrew Ayodele Kumapayi said according to statistic available to the corps 43 diving schools are certified while 13 are awaiting certification in the state presently.
The Commander who disclosed that the already certified driving schools still need recertification said the requirements for the certification of driving schools includes, registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission, availability of class rooms and administrative offices, use of road worthy vehicles and licence instructors.
Other requirements according to him are the availability of instructional materials, state traffic laws, first aid kits, fire extinguisher, high code and the availability of space amongst others.
Earlier the chairman of the association of driving instructors of Nigeria Agidi Olusola Daniel had informed the commissioner of the association’s readiness to partner with the state government to flush out quacks in the sector.
The committee which is made up of representatives from the State Ministry of transport, Federal Road Safety Corps as well as the association of Driving instructors f Nigeria is headed by Engineer Ephraim Uranta, head of Department of Mechanical/Electrical engineering of the Ministry of Transport. ####
