Every society prescribes a set of norms which it expects that its members should faithfully follow and any conduct that violates these social norms is referred to as deviancy. Though, these social norms, values, ethics and acceptable conduct vary from society to society. For example gay marriage is acceptable in most western countries whereas it is a taboo in most African societies.
The Nigerian society is fast retrogressing. The idea about morality in Nigeria is fast loosing its essence as a result of failure of value system that drives the people to contribute and provide a framework for societal regeneration.
The level of moral bankruptcy in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions today among young women calls for sober reflections and urgent attentions to sustain the growing society before it collapses.
It is often argued that moral uprightness is an important ingredient in building prosperous nations over the years. This is why nations take the issue of moral upbringing especially among the youths very serious. This is because the younger generations are often seen as the leaders of tomorrow. So, their mental and spiritual state of minds is of very important to any nation that desires development.
The growing rate of campus prostitution in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions today is raising a serious concern among Nigerians. It is often said the ivory towers is the last stage of moulding leaders of tomorrow, in preparatory for their engagement as leaders and policy makers of the future. So, if such towers are now soaked with the evil of prostitution, then the nation is in deep crisis. Campus prostitution is now a common business in our higher institutions with the culprits not hiding their trades. This is a bad omen for motherhood and academic excellence. Societies that are armed with sound moral are rule by good leaders and don’t deserve leaders that are corrupted and dented from its root.
Ironically, as the nation experiences the growing rate of campus prostitution in her tertiary institutions so the decaying in the leadership structure of the government. That means there is direct relationship between moral uprightness of a society and the kind of leadership at the saddle of any society. The Nigerian state and leadership structure have been the major promoters of this illicit trade or business in our campuses. From available finding, these mothers of tomorrow are often used to appease a visiting guest whenever there are social events in town. Such events are political conventions, party meetings and social jamborees. The Nigerian state uses these future mothers to satisfy their personal or group desire.
The major clients of these campus prostitutes are major big shots in power, no wonder the business of campus prostitution is receiving enough patronage.
The raise of campus prostitution has just portraits that the core values and moral system in Nigeria institution is fast loosing it relevant. This is an indication that the rise in campus prostitution is a direct result of growing rate of poverty and hopelessness in the country, occasion by failure of leadership over the years. This general hopelessness is what is propelling these future mothers to sell their honey well for a pattering sum of money to take care of themselves in school amidst parental neglects and inactions.
The fast growing rate of campus prostitution in Nigeria especially in our tertiary institution should be a thing of concern to every serious and positively minded Nigerian. We can’t afford to lose the mothers of tomorrow to the ills that had almost swallowed our tertiary institutions.
We are now filled to the brim with certificates that the owners cannot defend. Hard work, research and intellectual pursuit have been thrown to the dustbin of history, as most students now attain examination success by giving in to the demands of their immoral and life shortening lecturers. This pose serious threats to our academic values and standard.
Indeed, caution should be taken by all concern the way and manner in which our future mothers are been exchanged for a plate of pottage of yam. And the future mothers should be aware that they are the mothers of tomorrow, anything structure they build, it is into the future. If the foundation is destroyed, what would the righteous do? Be careful, you hold the moral structure of this nation tomorrow. Train a woman and you train a nation. Don’t push our dear nation to the grave.
The government should formulate a policy on how to help these young mothers to overcome this challenge to have a well balanced structure. ###
