Court Remands Five Armed Robbers Over N7million Car Theft

Five suspected criminals who allegedly robbed at gun point a Venza car valued at seven million naira (N7,000,000) and also collected ransom of one million naira (N1,000,000) ransom from Mr. Raymond Ogbonnaya after kidnapping his wife, Nkasiobi Raymond at Nwobilor Street, Ekleeohari Rumuodara, Port Harcourt have been arraigned before a magistrate court sitting in Port Harcourt.
The accused persons are: Abraham Irimiya’m’ 20yrs, John Umoren ‘m’ 25yrs, Ubok-Utom, Jackson ‘m’ 46yrs, Francis Akpan ‘m’ 32yrs and Aba Andrew ‘m’ 24yrs.
On his part, the trial Magistrate, I.O Agbeson Esq. maintained that the court lacks the jurisdiction to entertain court three which reads in part: “That you Abraham Irimiya, John Umoren, Ubok-Utom Jackson, Francis Akpan and Aba Andrew with intent to extort did demanded and received with menaces the sum of one million naira (N1,000,000) from one Mr. Raymond Ogbonnaya, the husband of the victim, while she was in your custody with the threat of not releasing her, if the demand is not complied with and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 406 of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Vol. II, Laws of Rivers State 1999”.
The Magistrate therefore ordered that the accused persons be remanded in prison custody and advised them to approach the High Court for their bail.
He also referred the case to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice and adjourned the case to Nov. 19, 2015. ###
