Boko Haram And National Integration

mapNo doubt Nigeria as a nation is “wrapped” with series of treaties signed by the white colonial masters with our ancestors.

Most of the treaties centered on peace and trades were signed long before the amalgamation of Southern and Northern protectorates in 1914 by Lord Fredrick Lugard. Nigeria is a conglomeration of independent city states with their armies and heads of states. This was the reason why the white racists initially found it difficult to administer the various components of the country. Hence, they introduced policy of Direct and Indirect Rule System.

The coming together of several autonomous states to form a giant nation in the sub-continent of Africa is a blessing. Nigeria is blessed with both human, natural and material resources. One of the major challenges facing Nigeria is lack of effective leadership. Our leaders are self centered. They are bereft of ideas, policies and programmes that will tackle the level of poverty in the country. Nigerians are living in abject poverty, while our leaders are living in mansions. Nevertheless an indivisible nation is a sure way to a greater nation.

The activities of Boko Haram, an Islamic fundamentalists’ group are threatening the co-existence of Nigeria. In the past few days, the Boko Haram sect has killed over 200 innocent Nigerians.

Several weeks ago, Federal Government College in Yobe State was attacked which led to the death of over 63 students. Unarguably the incessant attacks organize by the Islamic sect will chase away foreign investors and business magnates from the country.

Without being sentimental, tracing the origin of Boko Haram in the contemporary Nigerian society, it came to existence, when a son of Niger Delta stepped into the Aso Rock. It is a plot to disorganize and destabilize the administration of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. Nigeria is bigger than one man or a group of persons.

In as much as I believe in one and indivisible Nigeria as a country, if the four-and- a half year old insurgency of Boko Haram is not checked, Nigeria of 36 states maybe divided into several independent countries on the surface of the map of the world. However, no matter the situation on ground, as a patriotic citizen, I will continue to affirm one Nigeria, one Nation and one Destiny. ###
