54 Is Worth Celebrating
Nigeria, the “giant” of Africa continent on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 celebrated her 54 years of political autonomy.
Before 1st October, 1960, Nigeria as a nation was under the British Colony. It’s affairs were being decided by the British Colonial Government.
Nigerians have no say in their father land. Plum jobs have been reserved for the whites, while the blacks (Nigerians) were relegated to the background.
After series of protests, agitations, conferences within and outside the shore of Nigeria, the nation gained her political independence in October, 1 1960.
So many nationalists were involved in the struggle for Nigeria’s independence namely: Chief Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Anthony Enahoro, Ernest Ikoli, Abubakar Tafawa Belawa, Sir. Ahmadu Bello amongst others.
Kudos must be given to these early nationalists, because of the selfless services to the nation. Today Nigerians are enjoying the fruits of these patriots, who sacrificed their time, resources and even blood to salvage the nation from the colonial masters.
As the nation became independent in 1960, Nigerians begin to control their domestic affairs; the country is no longer attached to British’s apron strings.
It is worth celebrating that the nation is at 54, considering the peaceful disposition of the people of the country. Though there are challenges confronting the corporate existence of Nigeria, such as the activities of Islamic fundamentalists popularly known as Boko Haram.
Without mincing words, it is correct to say that Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s administration is trying it’s best possible to ensure that Nigeria is truly independent especially in the area of the economy. In as much as our economic is growing the Government of the day should do more in terms of initiating policies and programmes that will uplift the living standard of the masses. Let us use this medium to felicitate with Nigerians, as the nation rolls out drums and celebrates her 54 years of political autonomy. Happy Independence Anniversary Celebration.###
