Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson yesterday urged Nigerians to work for the unity of the country irrespective of their tribe, state or religion.
He spoke during his visit to the palace of Awujale of Ijebu land, Oba Sikiru Adetona in Ijebu, Ogun State.
According to him, the unity of Nigerians was more important than any individual’s interest in the country.
While describing his visit as historic, the governor said: “coming from the creek of the Niger Delta to the heartland of Yoruba land demonstrates the fact that Nigeria shares historical values that can’t be wished away,
Dickson said his visit was to reconnect with his maternal root in the political headquarters of the Ijebu people.
He disclosed that his grandmother who was a princess from the town hailed from the Fidipote Royal Ruling House.
His words: “we are to reconnect with our roots. We have returned home and we have retraced our lineage to Fidipote Ruling House in Ijebu Ode. I am highly delighted to be here and henceforth, I promise to contribute my quota to the development of Ijebu land as well as to work with you (Awujale) to make our country a place where people live in peace in and harmony.”
Welcoming the governor, the Awujale described the visit as unique and historical and commended him for retracing his roots. The Awujale told the governor in company with members of his family, cabinet and traditional rulers from Bayelsa that the Fidipote, where the governor hails is one of the four ruling houses in Ijebu land.
The chairman of the Ogun State Council of Obas and Traditional Rulers described Dickson as a typical shinning example of the Ijebu who would always fight for a just cause.
