Beef Up Security In Rivers

In the past few days, Rivers State is no longer safe for its inhabitants. The state is under siege as cultists, kidnappers, and killers got loose. The people of the state are now living in perpetual fear.

Last week, three (3) chieftains of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area were abducted at Eagle Island by unknown gunmen. One of the victims was a member of the Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Chinyere Igwe. Another was kidnapped on Wednesday in the Diobu axis of the Port Harcourt City Local Government Area.

Periodically, there are sporadic shootings at the different parts of the state. On Sunday, a serving councilor, Hon. Sotonye Georgewill was murdered by gunmen at his Accra Street’s residence in Port Harcourt. Also on Tuesday, a young man was killed at Azuabie community.

These series of killings, kidnapping and cultism are some of the challenges staring the face of the newly redeployed Commissioner for Police, Tunde Ogunsakin.

The Commissioner of Police should redeem his image by bringing his wealth of experience to bear to ensure that the local insurgency that is rearing its ugly head should be caught off.

Police Commissioner Ogunsakin can do this by giving his men and officers the needed support in terms of orientation, training and use of ammunition. The Commissioner should also post his men to various locations in Port Harcourt and its environs. In our opinion such locations include: Lagos Bus stop, Garrison Junction, Rumuola Junction, Station Bus stop, Agip Round about, Eagle Island, Illaobuochi/Urualla Junction, Rumuokoro Junction, education Bus stop, Isaac Boro Park amongst several others.

The Rivers State hosts a lot of multi-national companies, therefore security of life and properties is a task that must be down to avoid scaring away investors and businessmen and women, coming into the state to invest.

We will plead with the Commissioner of Police and other relevant security agencies to ensure that nothing hinder them from crushing the local insurgency of cultism and kidnapping in the state.  ##
