The Nigerian Institute of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV), Rivers State branch has recently held her 2014 Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) Seminar with the theme: “Meeting Industrial Needs by Updating Educational Curriculum for Estate Surveyors and Valuers”.
During the seminar, Barr. Onuoha Anugbum said that appropriate method of property valuation should be developed and maintained by Estate Surveyors and Valuers and professionally adhered to, for commensurate compensation, taking cognizance of the area the property is situated.
He also decried the situation where people lands are acquired or property destroyed during infrastructural development by government without following due process of property valuation and qualitative base survey to determine the cogent valuation.
Barr. Anugbum further advised members of the public to consult professional estate surveyors and valuers concerning their property to be on a safer side in case of any eventuality.
Adding that for professional to be adequately updated seminars like this should be continued. Also the idea of using tertiary institutions the venue and inviting students studying Estate Survey and Management is highly commendable because it will enable the students develop confidence in their chosen courses and imbibe the intricacies involve in the profession.
While the National President, Emeka Eleh congratulated Rivers State branch on its professionalism and hand work to move the institute forward. He, therefore obliged to grant the request of the branch to officially open a liaison office in Port Harcourt to cover the South South zone.
To this end, Mr. Emma Wike, Rivers State branch chairman thanked the president and officially named the branch office as Treasure Base branch.
He also noted that the profession is vast not just an aspect “Estate Agency” as the members of the public think due to the activities of some professionals who had failed to take advantage of other aspects of the profession “Estate agency has done to Nigeria what oil has done to Nigeria most professional have relied so much on estate agency that they have neglected other aspects of the profession”.
The chairman therefore advised estate agency in order to maximize the benefits of the profession, citing that he will always carry students along because they are the future of the profession and he would not want them to make some of the mistakes that have done in the profession, also to enable the students know that they are in the right profession with good prospects.
Also speaking, Dr. Mrs. Iyenemi Ibimima disclosed that it is expedient that an appropriate method of valuation for damage as a result of pollution, spatial distribution as well as environmental impact including land and crop damages should be formulated. In order to ascribed appropriate economic value.
This she said will alleviate the suffering of most people especially rural dwellers whose farm lands and fishing water had been damages as a result of oil pollution.
In conclusion, the chairman of the occasion Benjamin Okorokwo issued certificate of participation to professionals who participated in the occasion. ###
