Rivers Assembly Moves Waste Mgt.,Tax Levy Bills To Committee Stage

Despite moves by the anti-Amaechi six lawmakers to prevent the 25 pro-Amaechi’s lawmakers from performing their legislative functions in the old Government House, the lawmakers have committed two bills “Rivers State Waste Management Bill 2014 “and Tax Levy Harmonization Bill 2014.

The bills presented by Hon. Victoria Nyeche, a lawmaker representing Port Harcourt Constituency 1 which witnessed minor debates by the legislators on the floor of the House were unanimously moved to a Committee Stage by the lawmakers.

In her submission, Hon. Nyeche stressed that the issue to be considered in the debate should be whether the first reading of the bills have been made before the July 9th 2013 fracas pointing out that there still need for comments on the merits and demerits of the bills before it would be moved to the Committee Stage.

Supporting her prayer Hon. Innocent Barikor, a lawmaker representing Gokana constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly and Hon. Legborsi Nwidaada Khana constituency 1 stressed that base on development which the bills as presented did not seem to have been taking into consideration there is need for it to be studied.

Barikor maintained that “some shift in the bill was base on events on ground that require thorough understanding before it can be effectively debated open.

In his contributions, Hon. Nnemewo, a lawmaker representing Ahoada-East Constituency 1 noted that the bills have no demerits, adding that the debates made so far by the lawmakers were enough to be given a speedy attention for the benefit of the state.

Ruling on the bills, Hon. Leyii Kwanee, the Deputy Speaker of the House (Khana constituency II) who presided over the sitting pleaded that the lawmakers should be given ample opportunities or time to study the documents which were given to them earlier and come out with positive result, adding that, “this is the only way to ensure an enlightened discussions on the bills,” and committed the bills to the committee stage. ###
