The Nigeria Universal Periodic Review Media Network has expressed shock and dissatisfaction over the continued abuse of citizens rights by those in authorities, especially security officials attached to Governors’ convoys, security agencies and bullions vans.
The media outfit of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) noted with serious condemnation what it described as assault and serious violation of the rights of innocent citizens.
In the statement issued at the weekend shortly after an emergency meeting of the body, and signed by its chairman, Hon. Pius Dukor and the Secretary, Darlington Amagrame, the organization particularly called on drivers of government officials, vehicles and security vans, including bullion vans by banks and special services providers to be cautions of their reckless driving on high ways which are also used by other motorists and pedestrians.
The group frowned at the reported cases of ghastly motor accident and the killings of innocent persons who are future leaders of the country, particularly the intimidation and the killing of journalists by security agents in the various states across the country.
The Network appealed to the Heads of Security Agencies, including all States Commissioner of Police in the country to put a check to stop these deadly acts by their men and officers working with top government officials.
The state chairman of the group, Hon. Dukor stated that Nigerian Universal Periodic Review Media Network checks and monitors the abuse of the rights of the Nigerian citizens and will make report to the appropriate quarters.
It would be recall that reckless driving mostly by security agencies has caused the death of many including the recent case of Prof. Festus Iyayi, former ASUU president who was traveling to Kano for the NEC meeting of the body but involved in a ghastly motor accident with the Kogi State governor’s convoy.
Since the introduction of UPR mechanism by the United Nations, Nigeria has been reviewed for the second time on human rights abuses in the country. ###
