Court Frees Ex-Delga Councilor

An High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has discharged and acquitted one Hon. Tonye Bright Amatoru, an ex-councillor in the Degema Local Government of Rivers State.

Ruling on an application for the enforcement of fundamental human rights in Suit No PHC/1283/2013, the Presiding Judge, Hon. Justice D. W. Okocha condemned the incessant arrest and detention of the ex-councillor without investigating the complaint made by one Chief Gaskin Sobrasuapiri aka Land of Canaan.

She described the action of the police as gross violation of Hon. Tonye Bright Amatoru’s right to personal liberty, dignity of the human person and privacy as guaranteed under the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Presiding Judge issued a perpetual injunction against Chief Gaskin, the Rivers State commissioner of Police, the Deputy Commissioner of Police State CID, Port Harcourt, the O/C, Homicide State CID, Port Harcourt and any other person from further arresting and detaining the ex-councillor in respect to any complaint made by Chief Gaskin Sobrasuapiri. ###
