The Rivers State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association held her 63rd Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference in Port Harcourt with the confirment of Distinguished Service Award on Chairmen of two Local Government Areas in Rivers State.
The event, which took place on Saturday, saw the presentation of Distinguished Service Award on the Chairman of Andoni Local Government Area, Erastus Charles Awortu, and his counterpart, Onengiyeofori George, of Asari-Toru Local Government Area.
The NMA’s choice of Erastus Awortu for the award was in recognition of his contributions to the improvement of secondary healthcare in Andoni, while that of Onengiyeofori George was for what the Rivers NMA described as his “immense contributions to healthcare development and administration in Asalga LGA”.
The Asalga council boss was present to receive his award, while his Andoni counterpart was represented by the Vice Chairman of Anolga Council, Tema Christopher Udung.
The awards were signed by NMA’s State Chairman, Dr. Ebbi D. Robinson, and the Secretary, Dr. Hope O. Ovunda.
Other notable recipients of the Distinguished Service Award included Amaopusenibo, Dr. Sam Sam Jaja, Dr Seinye O. B. Lulu-Briggs, and others.
The Luncheon and Award Ceremony was the culmination of the NMA Rivers State Chapter’s 63rd Annual General Meeting (AGM), and served as a time to unwind and relax.
Another highlight of the ceremony was the induction of senior medical practitioners into the NMA’s Elders Council to which a former Senator and prominent political stakeholder, Senator Denton West, was among those inducted.
The NMA Rivers State 63rd AGM and Scientific Conference began with a Thanksgiving Service at the RCCG Amazing Grace Model Parish in Port Harcourt on Sunday 13th August 2023.
This year’s theme centered on litigation in medical practice, as a way to address issues of litigation faced by medical personnel in course of discharging their duties.
