The Chairman of Asari-Toru Local Government Area, Hon. Onengiyeofori George has said his administration has zero-tolerance for illegal oil refining activities in the area, adding that he would intensify efforts to totally stamp out the activities of oil bunkering particularly in Kieni-Ama Community in ASALGA.
George said this when the state House of Assembly Committee on Environment paid him a courtesy call at the Council Secretariat in Buguma as part of their oversight function.
The council boss, who commended Governor Nyesom Wike for declaring war on artisanal oil refining, said his administration has already constituted a committee to tackle the issue in the area.
He outlined the successes of the Asari-Toru Special Task Force on Illegal Oil Bunkering, and drew the attention of the House Committee on Environment to the obvious challenges his administration has faced in its fight to stamp out trucking activities in Kieni-Ama Community.
George assured the House Committee on Environment that his administration would continue to assist in making the job of the Special Task Force on Illegal Oil Bunkering easier through the provision of logistics, emphasising that with collaboration from the security agencies, more milestones would be achieved in the fight to salvage theenvironment.
Earlier in his address, the Chairman of Rivers State House of Assembly Committee on Environment, Hon. Dumle Maol, said the aim of the visit was primarily to enlighten the council on the dangers of illegal oil refining activities and to ascertain the efforts of the council to curb the menace.
As part of activities marking their oversight function, Maol and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly Committee on Environment were accompanied by George and members of his cabinet on a fact-finding inspection tour at the abandoned trucking site in Kieni-Ama Community.
