There is no controversy, that the Niger Delta region is volatile and dangerous due to youth restiveness and other related activities.
Of recent the Niger Delta is under siege as different king of militant groups take their agitations for economic emancipation of the region to the front seat.
The agitations have caused untold hardship to the oil firms and multinational doing business in the region. The militants’ activities have adverse effects on the oil exploitation and exploration in the Niger Delta geo-political region.
Looking critical the reasons behind the emergence of militancy in the region, one would be forced to blame the Federal Government’s insensitivity to the plight of the people of the Niger Delta area.
Doubtlessly, the Niger Delta is the region that lays the golden eggs that drives the socio-economic development of the Nigerian state. However, despite its enormous contributions to the economic growth of the country, it lacks social amenities that facilitate, empowerment and development. The deployment of the military in the Niger Delta cannot usher in the needed peace and development to the region, but sincerity and transparency on the part of the Federal Government can restore sanity and absolute peace in the area.
Governments at all levels should ignite policies that will provoke infrastructural development in the Niger Delta, not the use of force and might. ###
