Editorial: Need For All Peace Summit In Rivers State

Peace is essential in the development of any society. A community without peace cannot move ahead in the scheme of things. Without mincing words, a society where kidnappers hold sway, killers are moving freely, cultists operate now and then cannot be said to be peaceful. In such a situation the society is bound to be in a perpetual chains of poverty, fears, agonies and pains.

In the past few years several towns and villages in Rivers State have not been enjoying peace, this has snowballed to penury and under development in the rural areas.

Of recent communal clashes, kidnapping, killings, violence and cultism become the order of the day.

Hundreds of persons have brutally murdered, several sustained life threatening injuries and property estimated at millions of naira destroyed in several rural communities in Rivers State. Local government councils like Ahoada-East, Ahoada–West, Abual/Odual, Emohua, Asari-Toru, Gokana, Tai amongst others have never known peace in recent time.

The worst aspect of the lingering crisis in the state it is that is very difficult to identify the immediate and remote causes of the mayhem. At this point, we will applaud the governor of Rivers State, Governor Nyesom Wike for adopting various strategies to ensure that peace reigns in the state.

However, for Rivers State to move on and experience peace, there is need for the government to convoke All Peace Summit to brainstorm and deliberate on how to restore absolute peace in the state. ###
