Teachers In Rivers State Complain About Unpaid Salaries

Nyesom-WikeThe Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers has expressed disappointment over the continued delay in the payment of salaries of most of its members for over five months.

State Chairman of NUT, Lucky Nkpongene, said most members of the union had completed the biometric verification exercise but were yet to be paid.

Nkpongene particularly mentioned teachers in Port Harcourt City Local Government, Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni, and Obio-Akpor Local Government.

Nkpongene, who made the revelation in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt, wondered why government officials had been claiming to the public that no teacher was being owed.

The NUT Chairman warned that the union might be forced to embark on some action if government failed to resolve the matter with teachers.

According to him, “We have made several consultations and just yesterday we have registered our complaints. Our members are being pushed to the wall and I can assure you, we will bounce back.”

Meanwhile; the delay in the payment of workers by the Rivers State Government is also being experienced in other sectors.

The leadership of the State Joint Public Negotiating Council has scheduled a meeting within the week to deliberate on the issue.
