Unequivocally the Grassroot Development Initiative GDI is a frontline socio-political group in Rivers State. GDI is a household name in the political landscape of Rivers State and even beyond.
Barely three (3) years ago when Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi was the governor of Rivers State, ninety-five percent (95%) of politicians were afraid to express their opinions about the poor performance of his administration in the state.
Political activities including meetings and gatherings were banned. Ex-governor Amaechi then was the man fully in charge of the state. No one dares him and go scot-free. The entire state was in chain and the current Minister for Transportation was going round abusing the then president of the federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
The emergence of GDI silences so many ugly things in Rivers State, such as unnecessary criticism against Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
The GDI mobilizes support for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, preaches equity, justice and fair play in the state.
The group under the leadership of Hon. Bright Amaehule and Hon. Samuel Nwanosike brought a total turn around in the political history of Rivers State.
Several politicians because of fear of Amaechi refused to identify with the GDI and tagged its members all sorts of names.
Thus members of GDI suffered inhuman treatments, faced alot of political persecutions from some politicians. In some LGAs the political class did not want to see members of the association, especially when it was discovered that Gov. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, then supervisory Minister for Education was the Grand Patron of the association. In some communities especially in the riverine axis, GDI members have been declared persona non grata as punishment for identifying with Wike’s governorship ambition. In some LGAs like Asari-Toru, GDI members were beaten and wounded.
Precisely 14th July 2014, during the launching of the Asalga chapter of GDI dangerous explosives were thrown at members and there was sporadic shootings. All these ugly incident took place in the present of the grand patron.
Shortly after the gubernatorial election and the grand patron emerged as the governor of Rivers State, people who initially hated GDI, manipulated themselves to be recognized by the governor. They also push the members of GDI behind in the scheme of things. Members of GDI in various LGAs are passing through pains and challenges.
A national officer of GDI from Ahoada-West LGA, Comrade Olala was brutally murdered, last year and uptil now his killers are nowhere to be found at the time of filing in this report.
Severally the GDI co-ordinator in Ahoada-West, Comrade Daddy Green come under terrible attack launched by the hoodlums. Some GDI supporters were brutally murdered in the Ahoada-East and Ahoada-West LGAs.
A GDI national officer in Abua/Odula LGA, Dr. Krama was also attacked by unknown gunmen in his community.
Some Rivers politicians are making efforts to scuttle the governor’s political platform, the Grassroot Development Initiative GDI. They are doing this by feeding the governor wrong information about the members of GDI. The governor should as a matter of urgency do something about this secret plots by the so called stakeholders in the various LGAs before they will destroy his administration with their selfish ambition. ###
