As part of deliberate efforts to ease difficulties experience by commuters in Port Harcourt the Rivers State Government has signed an agreement with Metro-Connect in the provision of a rapid bus service.
Speaking during the signing ceremony in his office in Port Harcourt Rivers State Transport Commissioner Deacon Akie Dagogo Fubara said the State Government is to provide the enabling environment and concession while Metro-Connect provides the infrastructure and funding to run the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) scheme.
According to him, the scheme which is similar to what is obtainable in developed cities across the globe would help decongest traffic on our roads.
He said the scheme is a Public Private Partnership which will ultimately translate into the provision of an effective and efficient transport system to cater for the needs of the Rivers people.
Also speaking the Managing Director/Chief Executive of Metro-Connect Barrister Allwell Wokeh said his company is partnering with the Rivers State Government to restructure and modernize the transport system for the benefit of residents.
He said they have ideas and the capacity to restructure the system in line with how the United Kingdom system operates, stressing that the United Kingdom has the best transport system in Europe.
Meanwhile, as a sign of appreciation to the Rivers State Government Metro-Connect has concluded plans to clean up Aba and Ikwerre roads free of charge.
According to the Managing Director/Chief Executive of Metro-Connect on Aba road axis the cleanup will commence from Oil mill junction to Isaac Boro Park. While on the Ikwerre road axis it will commence from Rumuokoro to Boro Park also.
He disclosed that his company is deploying a total of 600 staff, three hundred in each axis to do the job.
