The Grassroot Development Initiative, GDI is a socio-political organization that believes in good governance, justice and equity in Rivers State. Before the formation and the inauguration of GDI four (4) years ago, the entire Rivers State was in political darkness.
Nothing was working; the State was in total mess. Politicians were afraid to address problems affecting the State. Politicians cannot speak out. One man, Mr. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi was incharge of the entire State. The state’s economy was under him suffocating. In an attempt to liberate Rivers State from economic and political strangulation, the Grassroot Development Initiative GID was formed. The GDI was born right in front of me and I immensely contributed to its growth, development and maturity.
I became the first Assistant National Secretary of GDI. At this junction, let me commend the gallantry efforts of Hon. Bright Amaewhule, the President-General of GDI and Hon. Samuel Nwanosike, the National Secretary-General. With their leadership acumen the GDI went far. Today there is no local government area, ward and unit that one cannot hear of GDI. The Grassroot Development Initiative, GDI has taken roots in every segment of Rivers politics.
During the formation state of the GDI, so many politicians fought against its members. In my local government area, ASALGA, hoodlums, and cultists attacked us during the inauguration of GDI precisely on Sunday July 14, 2013 at King Amachree Square, Buguma. Explosives were thrown at us, gunshot everywhere, GDI members were beaten and wounded. I think GDI Asalga has passed through terrible situation. We have made a lot of sacrifices as far as GDI is concerned.
Success has so many friends and brothers. Now that our Grand Patron, Chief Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike has won the governorship election in Rivers State, people who had developed pathological hatred for us are now singing GDI song: “GDI we can, we can in God we trust”. GDI is the foundation of the politics of the NEW Rivers State, believe it or not.
