Party system is an important component of a democratic setting. Any country that preaches democracy without a party system is yet to adhere to the ideals of democracy. Unlike the military administration where political parties are totally absence.
Democracy parades different types of party system namely: one party system, two party system and multi-party system.
Nigeria as a nation because of her vast geographical spread and multi-lingual system, she operates multi-party system. But few years ago under the military administration of Ibrahim Babangida, two political parties were registered and recognized. The two parties namely: Social Democratic Party, SDP and National Republic Convention, NRC.
These two government sponsored parties actually laid a solid democratic structure and foundation in Nigeria but unfortunately the system was destroyed and rubbished by Ibrahim Babangida and Sanni Abacha.
In the second (2nd) Republic, six (6) political parties existed in Nigeria. They were National Party of Nigeria, NPN, Nigeria Peoples Party, NPP, Great Nigeria Peoples Party, GNPP, Unity Party of Nigeria, UPN, People Redemption Party, PRP and Nigeria Advanced Party, NAP.
Each of these political parties had their strong hold in the country. For instance the UPN dominated the West, NPP tenaciously held on to the East, and the NPN had its tentacles spreaded across the entire country. Thus NPN had been described by political analysts as National Party.
Rivers State under the current political dispensation which started since 1999 is dominated by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Politicians like Chibuike Amaechi, Magnus Abe, Andrew Uchendu, Barry Mpigi, Igo Aguma and several others who are championing the so called change mantra or agenda are the products of PDP. They made their fortune out of the PDP.
The electoral victory of Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike did not come to me as a surprise because Rivers State has been under the influence of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Members of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Rivers should stop wasting their time, energy and resources to wrestle power from the PDP. They cannot succeed Rivers State belongs to PDP, hence there is no other political party exists in the state. ###
