The two Rivers State government formerly sponsored teams, Sharks and Dolphins are dead and buried, while in their place is born “Rivers United football club of Port Harcourt.
Hon. Boma Iyaye while giving reasons for the birth of the new club “Rivers United” and the non existence of Sharks and Dolphins, said it has become cumbersome for the state to shoulder the financial responsibility of sponsoring two teams.
Therefore based on the recommendation of the 6-man committee set up to look into the issue of the state government sponsoring two teams, ably led by Chief Adokiye Amiesamaka came up with the idea that, the state government should rather merged the two clubs to be called Rivers United and bury the name of Sharks and Dolphins forever.
Speaking further he said, it is more profitable for the Rivers man to stand by a symbol as per in football with one team as an identity, which will better Unite Rivers football lovers as one people through football.
“All assets and liabilities of Sharks and Dolphins are belonging to Rivers United football club.
The state government will appropriately register the new club’s name with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and the league management company in due time”.
He urged the Rivers people to give the same support they gave to former Sharks and Dolphins football clubs which have given birth to Rivers United. ###
