The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP ruled Nigeria for sixteen (16) consecutive years. The PDP government at the national level began with Olusegun Obasanjo from 1999-2007, then came Alhaji Musa Yar’Adua who reigned from 2007-2009. Shortly after the mantle of leadership fell squarely on Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan who governed this nation for six (6) years. Since the nation’s independence in 1960, Nigerians have witnessed different types of government such as parliamentary, presidential, military diarchy and democracy. In all these Nigerians enjoyed democracy to its fullest under Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.
Nigeria and Nigerians experienced terrible leadership under Ibrahim Babangida and Sani Abacha. Corruption became institutionalized and reached its peak under the watchful eyes of Ibrahim Babangida, while political assassinations came to its climax when Sani Abacha was in power. Sani Abacha adopted draconia laws and promulgated obnoxious decrees to rule Nigerians.
Babangida and Abacha are birds of the same feather. They truncated our democracy. With their military mentality they wanted to rule Nigeria forever. If not for the timely intervention of civil society and pro democracy groups.
During the 2015 general elections, the All Progressives Congress, APC had told Nigerians that if voted into power it will ensure change(s) that will launch Nigeria on path of speedy progress and development.
However, nine (9) months after the APC took over power from PDP, Nigerians are under fire and brimstones. It is difficult to eat three (3) square meals in a day. The economy is biting. The prices of foodstuff and other essential commodities had gone up far beyond the reach of the common man. While the people are wallowing in poverty, pains, sickness and penury, President Muhammadu Buhari is busy traveling round the globe. Nigerians begin to ask “what manner of change is this?
We have already seen the change APC and President Buhari have brought to the citizens of Nigeria. It is a change that promotes poverty and penury. ###
