Rivers: INEC Fixes Feb, 13 For State/Nat’l Assembly Re-Elections

riversInformation reaching our news desk had revealed that, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has fixed February 13, 2016 for the State/National Assembly re-run election in Rivers State. A senior officers of the commission disclosed this to our political reporter.
It would be recalled that Appeal Courts sitting in Abuja, the capital territory of Nigeria, annulled the elections of the members of the National Assembly on the platform of the People Democratic Party (PDP). The Appeal Courts also nullified the elections of no fewer than twenty two (22) members of the Rivers State House of Assembly (RSHA). The courts called for fresh elections in the affected constituencies within 60 and 90 days respectively. The elections were nullified on the grounds of alleged electoral malpractices.
All registered political parties are now set for the re-run polls. However, there are fears that, the February 13, 2016 re-run elections would be characterized by massive violence and lack of electoral transparency. So many eligible voters have vowed not to exercise their franchise in the upcoming elections in Rivers State.
Information had it that dangerous ammunitions have been imported into the state and distributed to the different local government areas, LGAs ahead of the fresh polls. Nobody knows who is responsible for the importation of the arms, but sources informed our political correspondent the upcoming elections in the state will be bloody if adequate security measures were not put in place. ###
