N/Delta: Group Raises Alarm Over Rising Poverty

The Niger Delta Network Advancement Programme (NDNAP) has warned that unless urgent intervention is put in place to cushion the prevailing hardship currently being faced by the people of Niger Delta, the region could be thrown into turmoil. National president of NDNAP, Al-mustapher Emem Edoho, who raised the alarm in an interview with correspondents yesterday in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, said: “Government must move to douse the prevailing tension occasioned by widespread poverty in the region before it gets out of hand.” Edoho said, “President Muhammadu Buhari has come up with laudable programmes to fix Nigeria and we are ready to compliment various actions of government in the implementation of these people-oriented schemes.” He, however pointed out that such policies would only thrive effectively when the enabling environment devoid of violence has been created. While lamenting the current hardship being experienced by Nigerians in the face of the prevailing fuel crisis, Edoho, who believed in the capacity of the federal government to handle the matter, warned that the problem could expand beyond control if allowed to be hijacked by what he described as “other extraneous forces seeking recognition in the polity”. NDNAP’s leader expressed worry over the ongoing protests by pro-Biafra agitators, saying that the peaceful protests could be hijacked.
