In the year 2012, several communities along the coastal region in the Niger Delta were sub-merged by flood. Properties including agricultural products estimated at millions of naira were destroyed and thousands of the indigenes of these affected communities were rendered homeless. Three years after, most of the affected families are yet to recover from the pains of the flood.
Barely two months ago, the Rivers State Government through its Ministry of Environment went round some local government areas, sensitizing the people on impending flooding. Some of the LGAs visited were Asari-Toru, Akuku-Toru, Degema, Ahoada-West amongst others. During the sensitization tour, the Ministry told the people what to do and mobile phone numbers to call whenever they observe any sign of flood.
Four (4) days ago, report reaching our newsroom revealed that no fewer than two hundred houses have been submerged by flood in some communities in the Ahoada-West Local Government Council Areas.
Flooding is a natural disaster that is very difficult to control. It is our plea that the State Government should swing into action quickly to save the affected people from intense pains and difficulties.
The Rivers State Government through relevant authorities should send relief materials such as food items, drugs, mosquito nets, beds, clothing and several other necessities of life to the flood victims. The basic responsibility of every government is to protect lives and property. It is our believe that the Rivers State Government under the leadership of Chief Barr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike will act fast to cushion the difficulties that may have confronted the people of the affected communities. ###
