The Rivers State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has introduced a 5-A-side football tournament trophy in the memory of late sports presenter, writer, former chairman of SWAN to be competed for by Media Houses in Port Harcourt.
Chairman of SWAN Rivers State chapter made the revelation last week Friday, while the Association was having her ever first “Happy Hour” at the NUJ press centre, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
Giving reasons why the introduction of the Henry Kalio 5-A-side soccer tournament, he said, for Henry Kalio’s contribution to sports development, it is only fair enough for the association to immortalize his name through a football competition, hence the Henry Kalio 5-A-side soccer trophy”.
He further noted that the trophy when exhibited will bring the association together with love and unity.
Committees were formed to that effect as to have a successful competition among the media houses in Port Harcourt, in conjunction with the Rivers State Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
The tournament is schedule to be an annual event where all media houses in Port Harcourt were free to participate.
The competition was narrowed down to 5-A-side because; it was considered that some media houses could not constitute a full football team, if not the competition would have been a full field thing.
For that reason, the composition of each team should be 5-A-side, so that it would accommodate two or three media houses, as to combine to constitute a team in prosecution of the competition. ###
