Delga: PDP Chieftain Killed

Suspected armed robbers at the weekend attacked the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Degema local government area of Rivers State, Mr. Tonye Tyger, and his aides, killing one of them, Samuel Dappa.

The Newswriter gathered that Tyger and four of his aides were injured in the attack which occurred near the Polo Club along Tombia Street, at the Government Residential Area (GRA) of Port Harcourt, the state capital.

One of the survivors of the attack and press secretary to the PDP chairman, Jumbo Eferebo, who confirmed the incident, said the suspected robbers trailed them from a new generation bank located at the GRA Junction, along Aba Road in the state capital and opened fire on them.

Eferebo stated that they had gone to the bank to withdraw N5 million meant for an empowerment programme in the local government area, pointing out that the suspected robbers made away with the money after the attack.

The press secretary, who sustained a minor injury during the attack, said on approaching the Polo Club area immediately after leaving the bank, the gunmen opened fire on their car, killing one of them identified as Samuel Dappa, and went away with the cash.

He said, “We took the money from the GT Bank at GRA Junction and were just approaching the Polo Club when we started hearing gunshots from unknown gunmen who were pursuing our vehicle. One of us, Samuel Dappa, from Isokun community was hit by bullets while the bullet pierced through my back.”

Eferebo stated that Tyger suffered dislocation and bruises while other suffered different degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

However, efforts to get the reaction of the Rivers State Police Command were abortive as the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Ahmad Muhammad, a deputy superintendent of police (DSP), could not be reached for confirmationas at the time of filling this report.
