Indications have emerged how the immediate past governor of Rivers, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is plotting to unseat the incumbent governor, Chief Barr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, by working through the presidency to ensure directives are given to the trial tribunal to ensure the governor did not see the light of favourable judgment.
The Newswriter political correspondent gathered through a highly placed source in Abuja that the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari may have been gradually yielding to pressure from the former governor through some top APC members to influence the tribunal decision against the mandate of Rivers people.
The source, an APC known supporter who pleads for anonymity expressed worries over the move, say should Rivers election be nullify the Kano, Kaduna, Borno and Sokoto States amongst others in the northern zones should be made to face same treatment, recalling that what transpired in Port Harcourt was same as those in Northern states.
The Abuja source however, called on the presidency to allow the fragile peace in Rivers to develop into lasting one warning that any attempt to truncate democracy in the state in favour of the APC may spur up unimaginary situations in the state.
He recalled how the Department of the State Security Services, DSS, recently quizzed the state resident electoral commissioner Gesila Khan over an election that was adjudged free and fair even by the immediate past chairman of the commission, Prof. Ataihiru Jega and advised those responsible for such move to desist forthwith to give peace a chance.
The APC top shot further confessed that giving the state of affairs in Rivers before the handover date which smooth transition was robbed and treasury loot ensured, the incumbent governor has proved to the world his ability to lead the state, hence posits that he should be allowed to work.
According to the source, “It is doubtful if the APC candidate should he had won the poll be able to embark on such projects as exhibited by the Wike led government in the face of gross looting, smoothless transition and subsequent attempts to frustrate transition.”
“Though I’m an APC supporter, the then governor Chibuike Amaechi and our candidate Adol Peterside never voted in their respective units/LGAs, and how would they expect winning or with whose votes do they win, they should allow the mandate of the people to be. While we were busy with propaganda, the PDP were busy doing their home work and over run us during the campaigns, why won’t they won the April 11 polls. For me, though I’m an APC supporter we have lost out, let’s wait until 2019 if God would grant us favour or we reunite with our big umbrella, the PDP”. ###
