Sequel to the shooting incident by an ex-police Sergeant resulting to the death of a commercial bus driver, Mr. James David Legbara, the Rivers Police Command has dismissed and charged the officer to court.
It would be recalled that an ex-police sergeant name withheld shot a commercial bus driver, Mr. Legbara who hails from Khana Local Government Area to death at Wimpey axis of Rumupirikon Obio/Akpor LGA on Friday 7th August, 2015 which led to spontaneous protest/demonstration by members of the public.
Briefing journalists on the activities of the State Police Command, the Rivers State Police Commissioner of Police CP, Chris Ezeike noted that the act of the ex-police sergeant was condemned by the State Police Command and the Inspector General of Police.
According to him, shortly after the incident, full scale investigations commenced and the outcome of the investigation indicted the officer of using his fire arm against the provision of force order 237, revealing that he has been tried in departmental room, found guilty for offences against discipline to wit: misuse of fire arms and discreditable conduct on 12th of August, 2015.
According to him, we are in touch with the family of the deceased driver, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and other stakeholders who have helped to calm the situation.
He commended those who calmed the situation for their understanding and maturity at the moment of grief pointing that the force has taking actions. In pursuance to ensure that justice is done “we know that this action may not be enough to bring back their bread winner but it will serve as a deterrent to other officers.
The Commissioner of Police who recalled the 30 vehicles which was donated to the Rivers State police Command for patrol by the Rivers State government assured public that within the extended period the police will remain focus and deliver a safer, more secure and prosperous environment as advocated by the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase when he visited Rivers State couple of days ago. ###
