On Payment of Salaries of Pensioners And Civil Servants In Rivers
Wage is the reward for labour. Hence, for any country to boost of strong labour force will not toy with regular payment of salaries, arrears and entitlements.
Nigerian workers in the last political dispensation experienced hard times as a result of poor salary payment. Some state governors owe their workers up to five (5) to seven (7) months salaries.
The non-payment of the salaries no doubt negatively affected the productivity of the civil servants. The importance of civil servants in the administration of a state cannot be over emphasized.
They are the engine room of any administration, therefore no sensible government plays with their monthly pay or any other arrears, entitlements do them.
In Rivers State, the former Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, before leaving office in May 29, 20015, owed civil servants billions of naira as salaries.
The Ex-governor did not spare the pensioners. Infact he ignored and disregarded the pensioners in such a way that the senior citizens were constantly on streets, protesting for their pay. Some of them even died after protesting to the Government House.
Last week a big reliefs came to both civil servants and pensioners in Rivers State as Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike announced the immediate payment of the backlog of salaries owe them by the past administration.
We commend the governor for his kind gesture towards the civil servants and pensioners in the state. We hope that this move will also increase the productivity of the civil servants and at the same time cushion the affect of the economy on the pensioners and their family.
Let us once again say, Governor Nyesom Wike thank you for tackling the problems facing the civil servants and the pensioners in Rivers State. ###
