Rivers Assembly Summons LGAs Officials Over Financial Recklessness

Sequel to a motion moved by Hon. Martins Amaewhule, the leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly and Lawmaker representing Obio/Akpor Constituency II that the activities of the local government in the state should be investigated; the House has set up 7-man adhoc committee members to investigate the matter.

Moving the motion at the hallow chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Tuesday Hon. Martins Amaewhule lamented the financial recklessness of the caretaker committee chairmen of the 23 LGAs set up by the past administration which made it impossible to develop the LGAs in the past three years.

According to him, in the past three years the former governor has been appointing CTC chairmen to pilot the affairs of the LGAs in the state which made it impossible to do a project pointing out that it cites the duty of the lawmakers who represent various constituencies to know the state of finance in the LGAs.

He, however prayed that the House should condemn the activities of the CTC chairmen and invite the directors, HPM, cashiers, Treasurers of the LGAs to the House for investigation.

Supporting the motion, a lawmaker representing Asari-Toru constituency II in the state House of Assembly, Hon. Enemi Alalibo George who recalled that the reason for setting up the LGA was to bring governance to the people of grassroots but expressed sadness that the CTC chairmen for the past three years existed only on collection of allocations and propaganda.

Hon. Alalibo while condemning the activities of the chairmen supported the motion moved by the leader of the House.

A lawmaker representing Opobo/Nkoro, Hon. Diri Kelly Adonye, Victor Ihunwo (Phalga III), Jones Ogbonda (Phalga II), Dagogo Farah (Degema Constituency) in their various contributions while supporting the motion condemned the financial recklessness of the CTC chairmen stressing that they diverted the funds meant for development of the LGAs for their personal use praying that the House should summon the HPM, cashiers and others to appear before the house and explain how they use the fund.

In his ruling, Hon. Ikuinyi Ibani, the speaker of the House while commending Hon. Martins Amaewhule for the motion noted that the 8th Assembly is not to witch-hunt anyone rather it is the duty of the lawmakers to ensure that the right thing prevails as well as develop the grassroots and the state.

Rt. Hon. Ibani, however compelled the House to invite the HPM, cashiers and other officials of the 23 LGAs to appear before a 7-man Adhoc committee members to explain the income and expenditure profile of the various LGAs.. ###
