Editorial: Who Is Afraid of Probe?

One of the basic ingredients of good governance that supports accelerated development is proper accountability. Prudent management of resources is also the hallmark of public administration. Hence any public officer that wants to bring unprecedented development that will ensure endurable and sustainable economic growth will not down play record keeping.

In light of this if government is a continuity, documentation, statistic keeping and accountability cannot be brushed away.

Therefore, there is nothing wrong to invite or summon a former governor or commissioner to give an account of his or her deeds while in office. The Holy Bible also reminded us of giving an account of ourselves before our creator on the last day. Thus probe of someone’s activities is not new in human history.

Last week the Rivers State government under the leadership of Chief Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike constituted a 7 man panel to look into the administration policies of the former Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. No doubt, there were so much mismanagement of funds, materials and resources by the immediate past Amaechi’s administration. However no one is indicting ex-Governor Amaechi of any misdeed.

In view of this the inauguration of the 7 man probe panel is not to witch hunt the past administration in the state, but to ensure good governance.

We applaud Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike for his astute administration qualities to launch the state on the path of new beginning. As a reputable medium that stands on the truth, we are in support of the Wike’s investigative probe panel. The panel should perform its assignment without fear or favour and come out with comprehensive report that will help the present administration to effectively plan so to ensure positive development.   ###
