‘Ogogoro’ Kills 16 Persons In Bonny

Information reaching our newsroom on Wednesday had it that no fewer than 16 persons have been sent to their early graves after drinking local gin (Ogogoro) in Bonny Island.

Our correspondent reported that, the said incident took place at various drinking spots on the ancient island of Bonny.

According to him, the unimaginable event took place at Workers Camp, Coconut Estate, Epele Community, and an inn behind the Police Station, Bonny.

The report filed in by our correspondent contained that one of the owners of these dangerous drinking joints also fell victim to the unfortunate situation.

Some residents who spoke to our correspondent attributed the ugly incident to contaminated alcoholic drink (local gin).

However, the mysterious death has caused strong panic among Bonny residents, as people are now afraid to consume any alcoholic drink.

Thus report reaching our newsdesk revealed that, the sale of alcohol has now reduced drastically in the area for fear of unknown.

Meanwhile the Amanyanabo of Grand Bonny, King Edward Asimini Pepple has banned the sales of alcohol in his domain. In the same vein, the police in the area have swung into investigation to ascertain the immediate and remote causes of the mysterious death. The sources informed this publication that the police have arrested no fewer than twenty-five (25) persons.

In another development at least five persons have been confirmed dead at Woji, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, after eating dog meat from a popular inn in the area.

the mysterious death has raised tension in the community as people have begun to question the tragic result that has followed the eating of dog meat alleged to have been cooked by one Friday Dickson, popularly called Etiaba.

The Newswriter gathered that Etiaba had been in the area for a long time, running an inn where he cooks only dog meat in Mini-Woji Road at Woji Town.

Mr. Brain Ogbondah, a member of the community, revealed that five people who ate the dog meat prepared by Etiaba, among others, had been confirmed dead some hours after eating the dog meat.

He said the situation has mounted tension in the community, resulting in an emergency meeting by the council of chiefs and elders, with a view to locating other members of the community who also ate the dog meat.

He said the suspect fled the community after the five people were confirmed dead.
