In an ideal democratic society, three organs of government exist namely: Executive, Legislative and the Judiciary.
Each of these organs or arms of government plays significant roles in the sustenance of any democratic system.
The absence of one of the organs may likely affect the entire society. In the military regime the non existence of legislative arm gives way to draconian rule. This, no doubt hinder development and trample on fundamental human rights of the citizens.
Though the three arms are important but when the judiciary is pushed to the background, it can cause the executive and legislative organs to step on the views of the ordinary citizens.
Precisely on the 9th July, 2013, the Rivers State House of Assembly became moribund, due to some crisis. Since then the legislative chamber, along the popular Moscow Road, Port Harcourt is under lock and key.
Enactment of laws is basic function of the legislative organ. And when that is not done, the citizens might not enjoy the dividends of democracy.
The courts in Rivers State are not functioning. Such situation is dangerous to the development of the state, as administration of justice takes the back seat. Condition such as this could return the state back to Thomas Hobbian’s state of nature, where life was short and brutish.
Rivers State under Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is in a terrible condition as the two (2) arms of government viz: legislative and judiciary that suppose to strengthen our fragile democracy have gone to oblivion.
In May 29, 2015, we believe that Chief Barr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike will resume the office of the Governor of Rivers State. And he will immediately restore all the fallen democracy structures in the state. I am looking forward to that glorious day when true Rivers sons and daughters will shout for joy. ###
