A frontline socio-political group in Rivers State, Grassroot Development Initiative (GDI) says it would follow constitutional path to stop Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi from conducting the local government council election slated to be held on May 23, 2015.
The President-General of GDI, Hon. Bright Amaehule who disclosed this at a briefing in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, said that the governor has no locus standi to conduct a council polls at this point of transition, except he wants to throw the State into confusion.
Hon. Amaehule pointed out that the governor’s decision to hold the local government elections could lead to political conflict in the state.
The GDI boss picked holes in the Prof. Augustine Ahiazu’s Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC’s election timetable, saying that it is faulty. According to him, the RSIEC fails to issue the statutory ninety (90) days notice to all the registered political parties to prepare.
According to him, if Governor Amaechi refuses to drop the plan of conducting the council polls, the association has no other option than to institute a legal action against him. ###
