In its attempt to reduce crime in the State and ensure peace and security of lives during the forth coming general elections, the Rivers State Police Command has intensified its efforts to fish out criminals and their sponsors. The results of this has led to the arrest of one prominent Chief, residing on Okene Street, Rumuwosu, Rumuwokerebe, Rumuokwurusi Town who was allegedly caught with some fire arms and live ammunition at the weekend by members of the SOS squad.
A senior police officer with the SOS Squad in Rivers state confirmed the arrest, but declined comments for security reasons but wondered what the Chief who is said to be a native of Ubakala, Umuahia, Abia State could be doing with fire arms and live ammunition stating that full investigation into the matter has began.
A neighbour who lives in Okene Street speaking under anonymity confirmed the arrest but condemned the ugly manner in which the SOS carried out the arrest. “It was just too embarrassing, at least SOS should have invited him for interrogation, I don’t like the manner they picked him just like a common criminal” she noted.
An indigene of Rumuwosu who refused to give us his names where the said Chief is living as a tenant also confirmed the arrest noting that they are not surprise at the arrest describing the chief as controversial, and a trouble maker.
According to him: “This man has been living with us for a long time, he has been involving himself in one problem and the other. He is always found of carrying guns and live ammunition about. He is just too controversial. He has so many cases in the court, specializes in dragging land and he is also involved in many chieftaincy wrangling”.
All attempts to speak directly with the said Chief up till now proved abortive as his line is constantly switched off. ###
