Barely twenty-four (24) hours after the members of the Rivers State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) staged peaceful protest against the state government’s insensitively to their plights and inability to pay the N3bn arrears owed them, the governorship flagbearer of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the state, Alatubo Charles P. Harry has promised to clear the said arrear if voted into power come February 28, 2015.
Charles Harry who made this known when he visited the leadership of the union on Monday, sympathized with the pensioners, saying that as soon as he steps into the Brick House in May 29, 2015, their plight would be a thing of the past.
He lamented the way in which the Rivers State Government is treating the senior citizens and described the situation as “sad and painful” further promising that in the next protest organize by the pensioners; the APGA would mobilize its members to join the protest in solidarity.
He, however told the pensioners that his administration would introduce a lot of welfare package that will ameliorate the affect of their plights.
Charles Harry had earlier regretted the poor condition of the health sector in the state, and condemned a situation where there are no drugs in the health centres and hospitals in the state.
He said that his administration would initiate better policies and programmes that will uplift the living standard of the masses in the state, when he takes over power from Governor Amaechi.
In his response, the chairman of the Rivers NUP, Elder Edward Festus-Abibo thanked the guber candidate for the visit and promised to convey the message to the other leaders and members of the union. ###
