Cancer No Longer A Killer Disease – Tonker

 

Cancer victims now gets hope to live like any other person as cancer is declared not a killer as people takes to be.

This followed the declarations made by two speakers, Dr. Alafaka Tobin and Dr. Uzosike Tonker who in their separate speeches in a workshop on cancer and human trafficking organized by NDDC and Deeve Global Resources last week at arena event centre GRA, Phase II, Port Harcourt.

According to Tonker and Tobin cancer ceased to be death sentence instead its treatable and advised victims of the disease to report in time to hospital, infact, women who detect breast cancer early in its development have a very good chance of a cancer free future which was not like that before.

Dr. Tobin further suggested three steps that every person would take to prevent breast cancer or any kind of cancer, eat a health diet, get regular exercise, keep weight down and avoid alcohol whenever possible and follow the recommended screening guidelines which include regular self examination and annual mammograms after 4 years of age.

Dr. Tonker described cervical cancer as a type of cancer that occur in the cells of the cervix lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. He however, advised that one can reduces the risk of cervical cancer by undergoing screening tests and receiving a vaccine that protests against HPV infection.

In the same vein, Dr. Akpan Margaret who spoke on Human Trafficking said that most of the victims of human trafficking are deceived or taken away against their will, bought, sold and exploited. They are bought, sold for sexual exploitation, force labour, street crime, domestic servitude or even the sale of organs and human sacrifice.

She has it that men, women and children are trafficking within their own countries and across the borders and that affects every continent and country pointing out Nigeria as a transit and destination centre for trafficking children to Europe, the middle east and other countries throughout Africa said that the highest rates of child trafficking in Nigeria is found in Niger Delta.

In her speech, the Managing Director Deevee Global Resources, Mrs. Vivian Ositah said the choice of the theme your health, your future and concentrated on cancer because of her deep regret for the death of a renown Nigerian, Prof. Dora Ikunyili who died of cancer and her pity for women who are dying and those suffering of cancer.

She thank NDDC for making the workshop possible and lauded the attendants nothing that without them the workshop could not hold, she applauds the speakers who delivered their speeches to the best understanding of the people.

Meanwhile, a participant at the workshop who fielded questions from newsmen, Lady Confident Ngozi Amadi commended the workshop, called on NDDC to continue the training and make good follow up on those who should be seen as victim of the disease.

She thank Deevee Global Resources for the initiative of such a training on cancer at a time like this, said she has learnt something and appeal that the workshop be taken to local areas for more to benefit. ###
