Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has warned its members against anti-party activities. The warning was handed down in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, after a meeting of the party executive, held at the party’s secretariat.
The meeting was attended by the anti-Amaechi lawmakers and all the chairmen of the party in the 23 local government areas of the state.
Reading out the six-point communiqué issued at the end of the meeting to newsmen, the state chairman of the party, Chief Felix Obuah, alleged what he called “nocturnal fraternisation of a certain Board of Trustees member from Rivers State, with the state APC leader, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi.”
The party said such fraternisation, under the guise of “meeting of stakeholders of Rivers State,” was aimed at undermining the party.
“The party hereby cautions the said BOT member to desist forthwith, from attending such meetings that are inimical to its interest,” Obuah said.
The party alleged that the BOT member, contrary to its constitution, summoned meetings, purporting to screen governorship aspirants, thereby fanning the embers of disunity within its fold.
Obuah warned: “We therefore caution all members of the party to desist forthwith, from attending any meeting summoned by the said Board of Trustees member, and/or any screening, for elective positions conducted by any person or group of persons, except as is properly constituted by the party.”
Regarding the 2015 election, he said the governorship slot had not been zoned to any ethnic nationality, adding that all qualified members had the right to aspire to the position.
The communiqué said: “The state chapter of the party has not and shall not zone the governorship ticket of the party to any ethnic nationality, senatorial district or local government area. Consequently, all constitutionally qualified members of the party are free to vie for the party’s ticket, to allow for the best candidate to emerge. “The principle of party supremacy and discipline shall be upheld, maintained and enforced by the relevant organs of the party.
Consequently, the party shall ensure internal democracy and provide a level playing field for every member seeking to contest any elective position.
Obuah said Rivers PDP was poised to reclaim all its lost positions in the state in 2015 elections, adding that the state chapter had endorsed the candidature of Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for a second term in office.
