Politicians And Politics In Nigeria

map 2It is no longer news that 2015 is an election year in Nigeria. The Independent National Electoral commission has released the table for elections some months ago. And politicians are agitated and are scheming to win the minds of electorates. Indeed, it is obvious that Nigerian politicians are not after good and purposeful leadership with the way they are playing politics. Over the years, the Nigerian masses have been left in a state of oblivion based on the inability of putting necessary infrastructures and policy implementation in place.

The Politics of Nigeria by politicians is not people oriented rather it is about few individuals who form the government through political process. Now all the political Parties APC and PDP are waxing stronger to win elective positions of governance in Nigeria. In the political Parties, what is actually happening in terms of selecting or electing their flag Bearers? Would Nigerian politicians accept defeat if the process or processes of selecting or electing the candidates are genuine? Today, the rampant decampment from party A to B party is a major problem of Nigerian politics. It is also dishearten to see that most of the politicians who decamp do it on their selfish interest and not the interest of the masses.

Indeed, Nigerian politicians should allow enduring democracy to exist in Nigeria. Again, another major problem of politicians is character assassination because of quest to win at all cost, no matter who is killed and who is suffering. It is time to do away with such negative tendency that does not promote democratic tenets. The much ado about political powers without the citizens at heart is a threat to Nigerian politics. In Nigerian today, it is observed that politicians are desperate to do anything to win elections.

Thus, Nigerian Politicians have not been able to build National Consciousness or interest rather they build their selfish interest in the country.201 5 general elections are another testing period for Nigerians to know the kind of government that will be formed. As the politicians are seriously jostling for positions acts capable of truncating democracy should be eschewed.

The Use of offensive words and degrading statements during interview by politicians is unethical and barbaric. Nigeria is not the only country in the world that practice democracy. Therefore, Politicians should play politics without bitterness; Nigerian politicians are very crafty to bring in religion into politics. Nigerians need good government and not killing, maiming and destruction of properties. Politics should be used to develop the people and society.

According to President Obama of the United States of America, two days after he won the Democratic nomination to the U.S. Senate race, he received an email from a doctor at the University of Chicago Medical School. “Congratulations on your overwhelming and inspiring primary win”, the doctor wrote. The doctor described himself as a Christian who understood his commitments to be comprehensive and “totalizing”. His faith led him to strongly oppose abortion and gay marriage, but he said his faith also led him to question the idolatry of the tree market and quick resort to militarism that seemed to characterize much of President Bush’s his Foreign policy. It is time for the electorates to critically observe the life style and policy of politicians in Nigeria. Nigerians should not have myopic view of the politicians rather there is need for holistic observation of their activities both internal and external.

For instance, President Barak Obama would have lost if it was just abortion policy, but the pendulum swung to policy to support woman’s right in America. It is high time Nigerians understand politicians and how to vote them in or out. Leadership is tasking and politicians should not play with in Nigeria. As 2015 Elections are closer, politicians should see politics as machinery for purpose driven leadership and not about self centered leadership. For peace to reign after 2015 elections which time table has been released by INEC, politicians should play politics according to the principles of democracy. ###
