A 3 day management and leadership training programme is ongoing at the prestigious Sasun Hotels and Towers, Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt at the instance of Jaxy Consult Ltd in partnership with D-Farrow Integrated Services to train and equip Ijaw Youths Council Worldwide (Eastern zone).
The team of reknown consultants and resources persons from the consultancy outfits treated the topics to the admiration of the participants.
Two training topics, 360 degree leadership programme and parliamentary procedures were discussed by the resources persons. These include the complications of leadership and it difficult task and challenges. They contended that greatest leaders from history had blind spots and weak areas, noting that organizations need to develop leadership teams at every level.
They said that despite the challenges of leadership, an effective team working together can always tower against one leader working alone, pointing out that the objective of the course is to make IYC, (Easter zone) understand that leadership does not reside at the top alone. The resources persons also discussed the values and qualities of leadership, saying the participants should imbibe and cultivate moral values, build teams and shape people.
It also stressed that experienced leaders should listen to their team and secure leadership potential through doing the right thing at the right time to avoid irresponsibility and mistrust from the led.
On parliamentary procedure, it dealt with the fundamentals of the methods by which effective meetings are conducted and representatives’ decisions could be reached in every meeting. It also said that parliamentary procedure is advocated for and practice by different notable organizations and groups throughout the world.
The resource persons noted that the rules of conducting a successful meeting also involve extending courtesy to everyone and focusing at one thing at a time. It also mentioned the Roberts’s rule of order which says that en should observe the rules of the majority and ensure the right of the minority. The rule, however was written by a retired American Army General, Henry Martyn Robert years back.
The consultants stated that the message at the course is drawn out to ensure good leadership in management and believed that the IYC, Eastern zone will benefit from the training.
A frontline Ijaw activist and elder of Ijaw Consultative Forum, Alhaji Farouk Idaoboloijah described the training as timely, saying that it will give Ijaws a direction to determine the kind of persons in leadership.
He as well said that anyone to lead the Ijaws should be tried and tested person that must have passed through the rudiments of the struggle, adding that Ijaw leaders were not proactive in the past.
He poured encomium on Comrade Peter Igbifa, the chairman, IYC, Eastern zone and described him as one that is open to ideal and equally possess an unparallel leadership quality that will drive the Eastern Zone forward. He advised the followers; including the exco to bring on the table, notable ideas, formally and informally to enable him (Igbifa) creates impact.
Speaking to our reporter, the chairman of IYC, Eastern zone, Comrade Peter Timothy Igbifa advised the participants and the exco to imbibe leadership qualities to equip themselves for the tasks and challenges ahead, saying that the impact of leadership roles in the society are enormous.
He spoke on the theme of the training, “Equip me to lead well” and commended participants for their response in attending the programme which he said would produce new crop of leaders in the zone. Igbifa said the training programme is not limited to the executive committee members alone, but to elders, stakeholders and parliamentarians of Ijaw extraction, pointing out that he was satisfied at the turnout.
The training programme will be rounded up on Friday this week, as the consultants have promised to impact positively on the participants. ###
