Improving The Performance Of Education In Nigeria

Education is the bedrock of development in any given society. Hence for a nation to grow or advance technologically it will give special attention to its education sector.

Considering the importance of education in a nation building, so many countries are now restructuring their educational curriculum to meet the needs of the time. Education goes beyond the four wards of the classroom.

In Nigeria despite the huge amount of fund allocated to the educational sector, students performance in academic work is going down day by day.

Students especially in the higher institutions of learning no longer devote their time to studies, but rather resort to malpractices and cheating during examination.

Students also go further to give money to lecturers in order to pass their courses.

Reading has been thrown to the dog. Sadly university graduates of nowadays cannot read and construct a simple sentence. Who is to be blamed: the government or the students? We think that the governments at all level should admit that they are the major cause of the poor performance of academic activities in the educational system. Government fails to instill discipline in school as pupils and students behave any way they like.

Moreso the Ministry of Education, Schools’ Board and other educational parastatals have failed to discharge their statutory responsibilities by supervising the progress of the school system. Teachers do not teach and leave their duty post at will, because of lack of effective supervision.

The government should look inwards and come out with good policies and programmes that will better our educational system. ####
