A university Don and inventor of Chekwa Maths Games, Dr. Edward Onwuchekwa has attributed the incessant massive failure in mathematics as a subject in Nigeria educational system to what he called “maths phobia, bad teachers” and the fact that 95% of most people who teach mathematics in Nigerian schools did not study education.
Dr. Unchekwa also disclosed that most people decided to study Computer Science instead of maths, when they do not make up the cut-off point, and blamed Nigerian educational system for not making use of the discovery method of solving mathematics than going theoretical.
The Mathematician who urged leaders to learn how to use teaching aids, however charged the authors of mathematics books to as well as do better in producing workbooks and teachers guide and not just textbooks alone.
He further stressed the need for teachers and lecturers at all levels of education in Nigeria to always review their last class topics with students before going into a new one and the need to always summarize at the end of every lecture or lesson on everything that was taught.
Dr. Onwuhekwa whose over 2000 games have arrived Port Harcourt from China also emphasized on the need for inspectors at the primary school level and Head of Departments, HODs at the higher institutions to know how the actual class jobs are done in teaching students.
The inventor of Ayo further blamed maths failure on the inability of teachers to cover school curriculum and met purely on background as some persons said.
Onwuchekwa in the same vein, urged any teacher that is going to maths class to prepare him or herself like a pastor or preacher, who always ask for God’s guidance or on how to go about his teachings.
The mathematician also called on schools at all levels, individuals, private organizations and governments to take advantage of new Chekwa Math Game and Manuals to learn and solve mathematics easily. ###
